In 1950 the first discussion about a Christian school in Bowmanville took place. A group of immigrants from Holland came to settle in Canada and wanted to ensure that what was taught at home, church and school were consistent for their children.
The idea gathered steam in 1957 when land was purchased, construction was started, and the doors of the four-classroom school opened to 90 students in September. The school continued to grow and four classrooms were completed in 1960.
In 1964 the second addition added five more classrooms and a gymnasium. Kindergarten was added in 1976. In 1989 the exterior of the school was redone. New windows and bricks improved the look of the building’s exterior.
In 1991, the new green steel roof and the computer lab were added. In 1994 the parking lot was redesigned and the landscaping enhanced. The library and the bathroom renovations were completed in 1996. Knox celebrated its 40th anniversary in 1997, town water is hooked up and the first portable is added. Two more portables are added one year later.
Since 1996, the school community had been planning to expand the physical building. The third Knox building addition took place in 2004. This 2.3 million dollar addition makes Knox’s building a modern, well-equipped facility to serve the needs of tis students for many years to come.
Today the building is 45,000 square feet and has three physically distinct sections in it.
The primary wing includes the students in grades junior kindergarten to grade two, the junior wing houses students in grades four to six, and the intermediate wing has our students in grades 7 and 8. In addition, the facility includes a double-size gymnasium, a large library, two computer labs, a music/drama room, a primary resource area, a senior resource area, and a kitchen.
In addition to the physical development of the building, Knox has also changed who comes to the school. In its early beginnings, the school served only families from a Christian Reformed background. Today, Knox is a school that serves families from many different Christian denominations. Over twenty-five different churches are represented within the student body. It is our hope and dream that more Christian families would join us in an endeavour to educate children from a Christian perspective.
